We launch another TetraFlame – and this time it’s XL!
It’s been a great winter in our world of fire pits here at Ravens’ Way Metalworks. We’ve sent our TetraFlame Pack Away Fire Pit BBQs to new homes all over the UK, and we’ve also had so much fun personalising them as unique gifts for birthdays, Christmas, or just to say “I love you”.

Not only that, we’ve now added a larger version of the original TetraFlame to the TetraFlame fire pit family. Our new design, the TetraFlameXL Pack Away Family Fire Pit BBQ (on the right in the photos above and below) is just like its little cousin in that it also packs away inside itself AND instantly converts into a barbecue.

This larger size was initially a custom request for a bigger family-sized triangular fire pit in the TetraFlame’s signature style, but we loved the idea and it’s been proving popular with other hunters of unusual and unique fire pits and barbecues so we’ve added it to our online shop.

We’ve also created the TetraFlame Ground Guard, a metal base which enables TetraFlames to be used on decking, grass lawns and patios.

We’re hugely excited to have everything available in time for the first glimmers of spring, so with toasting forks at the ready we’re all set to keep cosy and get barbecuing on those outdoor evenings this year!

Our original TetraFlame fire pit barbecue design (the black fire pit shown in the photos in this article) was created with fun and flexibility in mind. We wanted to make a compact, portable fire pit that could instantly become a barbecue. It had to be easy to use, self-contained so that it could keep its own kindling and all its parts inside itself when not in use, and pack away into itself to take up the minimum amount of space for storage.
The TetraFlame Pack Away Fire Pit BBQ was born and it was twins! The Toasty Toes is the basic fire pit, and the SizzleChef comes with a specially shaped barbecue grill. If you have a ToastyToes you can easily convert it into a SizzleChef as the TetraFlame Barbecue Grill is available separately. Hooray!
It’s such a joy to use and look at
The TetraFlame is ideal for smaller gardens and cabins, or to pop in your car boot or campervan for outdoor adventures and road trips. It’s the perfect size for two or three people to sit round, toast their toes, and barbecue some food on. It’s proving to be one of our best sellers and is hugely loved by new TetraFlame owners all over the UK. We love our own TetraFlame SizzleChef for quick setup, fun outdoor cooking, and easy storage.

The very first TetraFlameXL Pack Away Family Fire Pit BBQ
Just before Christmas last year a customer asked if we could make a bigger TetraFlame SizzleChef so that their family could all keep cosy outside and have some festive barbecuing fun together while still keeping safe from Covid. We loved the idea of a bigger SizzleChef and wanted to make it into a new product in our fab metalwork web shop so we offered to do the design changes for free, and the TetraFlameXL Pack Away Family Fire Pit BBQ was born.
Totally making the most of our garden and the dry weather
The XL is almost one and a half times the size of the original TetraFlame, and is just over half a metre tall. To make the original fire pit bigger took a bit of thought. We looked at the suitability of the steels we used, and increased the thickness in areas such as the cooking grill and fire bowl to reduce the chances of the larger pieces of metal warping when hot.

We also needed to make sure that we didn’t accidentally do something like make the the cooking grill bigger along with its holes so sausages would fall through into the fire!
New base accessory enables TetraFlame fire pits to be used on decking, lawns and patios
Using a fire pit on wooden decking must always be done carefully, and having a suitable base with feet makes sure that the chance of damaging the decking is minimised, so when another customer wanted to use their TetraFlameXL on wooden decking we designed a special base to keep the heat of the fire away from the wood.

We liked this idea so much that we’ve designed a similar base for the original TetraFlame too. These new bases, the TetraFlame Ground Guard and the TetraFlameXL Ground Guard, mean that TetraFlame Fire Pits can not only be used on decking but also on grass lawns, patios and other surfaces that need protection from the heat.

TetraFlames are proving to be really popular during Covid lockdowns and distanced socials as they enable people to get together outside even if its a bit chilly. In fact just this week we sent seven TetraFlameXL Pack Away Family Fire Pit BBQs to one customer along with with a full set of accessories for each including SizzleChef Grills, Ash Catchers and Ground Guards.

They wanted this many so that their family and friends can keep toasty warm and share Covid-safe time outside with each other in the coming months. And look what fun they can have all together!

The fun of a fire pit with triangular sides
Because the triangles that TetraFlames are made of are equilateral, in other words they have equal length sides, these fire pits will fit together perfectly, so if you get together with other friends who have them you can put your fire pits together in fun shapes and patterns like diamonds, rows and hexagons like in the photos above and below. We can’t wait for get-togethers with our friends this year to have fun doing this with our TetraFlame again!

The TetraFlame Pack Away Fire Pit is our unique design inspired by a 3D shape that was associated with the classical element of fire by the ancient Greeks. This triangle-based pyramid is also called a tetrahedron, and is part of their “Platonic Solids” series. The unique geometry of this 3D shape means that the design is inherently extremely strong and sturdy. It is also what allows the TetraFlame to be packed inside itself, and when set up to be magically no taller than when packed. The magic happens because the tetrahedron is the only Platonic Solid whose angles between its internal surfaces (the dihedral angles) are equal and less than 90 degrees.

The TetraFlame and TetraFlameXL pack away fire pit barbecues are very efficient on wood and charcoal when warming people or cooking up some tasty outdoor food. The shape of the fire bowl stops the wood or charcoal spreading out too much which gives the fire a good depth, yet keeps the burning surface of the fire flat with the least amount of fuel. Fire depth is important to give good heating and a usable cooking time, while a flat burning surface is important to cook food through thoroughly.
As patio and decking heaters and barbecues TetraFlame fire pits win hands down too over gas-powered outdoor heaters and gas barbecues. Not only do they burn renewable fuels such as charcoal and wood which is great for the planet, you can also sometimes pick up wood for free near where you live by collecting sticks, logs, and even untreated off-cuts from companies that build things out of timber, which is great for your pocket too.
Our fire pits are even eco-friendly when we make them. Because of our commitment to sustainability and creating people- and planet-friendly metalwork we always use 100% renewable energy in their manufacture and very high recycled content steel to make them out of, but what makes TetraFlame fire pits really special is that their unique triangular shape means that the parts needed to make them fit neatly on a steel sheet. By its very design the TetraFlame makes very efficient use of steel, and this means we take fewer offcuts of steel to be recycled, saving energy in the recycling process.
And we don’t stop there. We put the little pieces cut out from the triangular grill holes into our metal finishing tumbler to clean other steel items, and we even plan use some of the strips cut out from the TetraFlame SizzleChef cooking grills in a new range of products ready to launch this summer.
