COR-TEN® weathering steel house sign, gate & post box
Our customers asked us to create a house sign and matching pedestrian gate with sheep proof gate latch. They also asked us to restore the vintage bread oven from their cottage so that they could use it as a post box again.
Important considerations included ensuring that the metalwork was sympathetic to their home’s past as a slate miner’s cottage, and to complement the nearby abandoned ancient ironwork from slate quarrying and hill farming. They were also keen to use imagery of the most common local species of wild heather near their cottage, and their favourite mountain across the valley.
We based our design on our species survey of the heather, research on antique Welsh bread ovens, the industrial heritage of the area, and life drawings of a sprig of heather and the mountain as seen from the cottage. From these we produced a number of concept sketches and scale drawings bringing the various ideas together into a project theme. There were no gate latches on the market that had the right look and feel as well as being sheep-proof, so we also designed and manufactured a bespoke latch in keeping with the aesthetics of the project.
